I’m currently in the process of letting Turboclear do its job on the all grain rye bourbon mash. After separating the grains I was able to squeeze out about 4.5 gallons of liquid. I was not able to get an initial SG reading because the mash was too thick. The difficult part of the process was continuously stirring the 8.5 pounds of corn in 4 gallons of water at 190 degrees for 90 min. After some sore muscles and a few blisters, the corn was thick and looked well gelatinized (I did not have any iodine to test the mixture). It was also difficult to mix in the malted grains but it did liquefy a little. Even after adding the additional 2 gallons, the mixture was still too think for the original SG reading. I let the mash ferment for 9.5 days (the fermentation was pretty active) and the SG reading was less than one (significantly more liquid in the mash now). Hopefully tomorrow I’ll be able to get a good ABV reading.
