Getting into home distilling doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. I know many who have got in on the cheap and are making their own shine with inexpensive stills.

If you’re wanting to get into home distilling, but don’t want to spend a lot of money there are some options. In the world of Amazon, you can buy budget friendly stainless steel stills starting at around $85. you can choose from:

Vevor 5 Gallon Still $85.50 with code VVPROMO

  • Easy to Operate: The alcohol still kit has a real-time thermometer on the lid, with a dual-display of Celsius and Fahrenheit, which is convenient for monitoring the temperature of the mash during the distillation process. The thumper keg helps discharge the hot water vapor, which helps to evaporate the alcohol for secondary distillation. Buy direct from Vevor and save.

Vevor 8 gallon still $123.50 w/ code VVPROMO

  • The Vevor alcohol still kit is ideal for distilling fruit wine, whiskey, brandy, champagne, vodka, water, ethanol, essential oil, etc. You can distill any alcoholic drinks according to your preferences. Moreover, the thickened stainless bottom makes it compatible with different heating methods, such as firewood, gas stoves, coal gas, coal stoves, etc. Buy direct from Vevor and save.

Vevor 13.2 gallon still $199.50 w/ code VVPROMO

This alcohol still provides you with a fermentation capacity of 13.2 gallons. Boiler barrel: 15.7"x15.7" (40x40 cm), condenser: 7.9"x4.7" (20x12 cm), which can ferment up to 12 liters of raw materials. Perfect for good beginner size batch. All parts are made of food-grade materials, including silicone, stainless steel, and copper. Buy direct from Vevor and save.

Now, these stills do have some flaws. The worm is a bit undersized but a modified worm isn't too hard to build with a 5 gallon bucket, but these stills are perfectly capable of producing a great spirit.

There are a number of folks in our Moonshine For Beginners group who have started with these stills and over time modified them to be great little stills.

These stills are a great place to start. It will give you the opportunity to make a few batches and decide if this hobby is for you, all while not breaking the bank. These first few batches will give you the confidence you need to prove to yourself you can do this.

I can also say that most people who get into this hobby with a small still end up upgrading at a later date anyway. You can get rolling quickly and be learning the ropes with one of these stills while you're saving up for that bigger still.

It’s also worth noting that these Chinese made stills that are cheap by industry standards do have 4.5 star ratings on Amazon.

So, as long as you know you’re not getting the top of the line and you may have to tinker with them a bit to get them running right, there is nothing wrong with the choice.

The process of distillation is a simple process and something I learned from George Duncan is that there are many techniques that can be used, but the process is basically the same. These Vevor stills are pot stills and work like any other pot still. You will learn a lot running one of these stills and then someday if you want to upgrade to a bigger, better still you will have already got through the learning curves involved.

You can learn the process of home distilling on these inexpensive stills just as well as you can with a $2,000 copper still.

Another thing I would like to mention is if you want to see firsthand how others have modified these stills or you would like to see how others have done keg builds you should join our free Moonshine For Beginners Volley space to actually see these mods and builds in video form. It’s a great space we’ve set up for our Moonshine For Beginners group. Lots of great discussions happening all the time and you can get real-time help from our other members when you run into problems.
