2/26/22: 30 gallon Insulated Mash Tun/Fermenter Build-Part 1

Livestream Date : February 26th, 2022 at 12:00pm CST

Introduction: A mash tun is a container that you can use to make your mash in and ferment in. The convenience of this is a double duty piece of equipment. Make your mash in the tun then when that's done add your yeast and let it ferment. We're also going to insulate this one so it can more easily be used  in colder weather conditions.

Description: In this build-a-long we will be constructing the inner barrel of the insulated mash tun/fermenter. It will take 2 parts to complete this build. After this livestream we will have completed the mash tun/fermenter portion of the build. If you have no need for it to be insulated, then you are finished, and you now have a 30 gallon fermenter.

The insulated outer barrel build will happen the following week on March 5th. As with all the livestreams, I will provide a list of all supplies, materials, and tools that you'll need to build along with us.

Insulated Mash Tun Parts List

Bellow is a list of all parts and materials you will need the day of the build. I have provided Amazon links for all the items available on Amazon.

1 - 30 gallon food grade barrel.

Unavailable at Amazon. These can usually be found locally on Facebook market place. I found mine at a local Ace Hardware. What is important about this barrel is that it fit inside of a standard 55 gallon plastic barrel. We will be using the 55 Gallon plastic barrel next week in part 2 of the build. If you get the 55 gallon barrel first then you can take it with you to get the 30 gallon barrel in order to make sure it fits inside the 55 gallon barrel.

3 - 1/2" Bazooka screen filters

These will be used inside the mash tun/fermenter to allow you to drain all the liquids off the mash while leaving the grains in the fermenter. Be sure to get stainless steel parts here.

Available at Amazon

1 - 3/4" Bulkhead Adapter

You will use the bulkhead adapter to create a threaded port in the side of your barrel.

Available on Amazon

These parts can also be found locally at almost any farm supply store.

1 - 3/4" PVC 4-way

This will be used inside the inner barrel to create a PVC manifold to make 3 legs for the mash filters.

These can be found at your local big box hardware store.

1 - 3/4" brass ball valve

This is the valve that will empty the barrel when the mash/ferment is finished. I have selected a valve specifically used for gas applications because these valves operate more smoothly, but you can use any type of 3/4" valve you want.

Available on Amazon

3 - 3/4" PVC male adapter

You will be attaching this to the inside of the bulkhead so the PVC filter manifold can be attached. Another will be attached to the outside of the bulk head for the ball valve. This can be found at your local big box hardware store.

2 - 3/4" street 90 degree elbows

These pieces will be used as part of the filter manifold. These may not be readily available at your local big box store so, I've included an Amazon link

3 - 3/4" plug to 1/2" female threaded adapter

These will also be used for the filter manifold and will allow the 1/2" bazooka filters to be threaded into the manifold. These are available at your local big box hardware store.

Approximately 12" of schedule 40 3/4" PVC

This is also for the filter manifold. You will be cutting this into 2 - 2" pieces and 2 - 4" pieces.

Insulated Mash Tun Tools List

Tools needed:

2 - medium size pliers or channel locks

1 - hack saw or any kind of saw to cut the PVC

1 - 1 1/2" hole saw bit/paddle bit

1 - drill

1 - Teflon plumbing tape

1 - razor knife or pocket knife

I will see you on February 26th, and we will build this thing! Stay tuned!
